The Central Shaheed Minar is a national monument situated in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is located between Dhaka Medical College Hospital and the Annex Building of Dhaka University. It was built to remember the great sacrifices of the language martyrs who laid down their lives for establishing our mother tongue as the state language.
In fact, it was built to make the glorious sacrifices of our language martyrs immortal. The significance of the Central Saheed Minar in our national life is great, and it is increasing day by day. It signifies love and honour for our mother language. It is a unique example in the whole world that the heroic sons of this soil sacrificed their lives for the cause of mother tongue. It also symbolizes the national unity and Bengali identity. Hamidur Rahman, a famous architect of Bangladesh, gave shape to the concept and design of the Central Saheed Minar by combining all the aspirations of Bengali identity and nationalism. The vertical lines of the minar provide the manifestations of inner strength. The four columns on both sides of the central structure reflect the balance and harmony of a united stand.
Today, the Central Shaheed Minar is the centre of cultural activities in Dhaka. Every year the Language Movement is remembered at the monument. Since all our democratic aspirations are rooted in 1952 and in the Central Shaheed Minar, let the monument be kept secure from unnecessary and unwelcomed intrusions.
