I have not seen the liberation war of Bangladesh. But I have learnt many facts about our liberation war from my grandmother. From her I came to know how the brutal Pak army killed my younger uncle Abul Hossain who joined in the war of our liberation.

In 1971 my uncle was a young man of 20 and a college going student. He was a very familiar figure to the people of our village, without any political background. In the April 1971, a stream of homeless people started to go to India. Being situated near the border of India, our village became a resting place of border crossing people. My uncle heard from them about the oppression of the Pakistani Army and their collaborators. Hearing the torture and repression by Pak army, my uncle became excited. He went to India to take training so that he could fight against Pak army. After taking necessary training, he returned homeland with a group of freedom fighters and started fighting against Pak army and their collaborators.

One day he was killed in a face to face attack at Haluaghat in Mymensingh. The enemy surrounded the group of freedom fighters. They fought for about a week. Then their drinking water was finished. All of them were very thirsty. So, my uncle just started firing to make a passage to go out for water and at one point he was shot. However, they killed most of the enemies by a suicidal attack with grenade. Other freedom fighters successfully occupied the shelter of the Pak army at the cost of my uncle’s life.
