Bangladesh is a land of rivers. Rivers are the natural wealth of a country. Bangladesh is a fertile land because of rivers. Many crops such as rice, jute, sugarcane etc. grow abundantly in our country. For this, about one hundred and twenty million people live in this small country of ours.
The prominent rivers are the Padma, the Brahmaputra, the Jamuna, the Meghna and Karnafully. There are many small rivers like the Dhaleshwari, the Buriganga, the Shitalakhkha, the Surma and the Modhumati. The main rivers have their origin in the Himalayas. They fall into the Bay of Bangla. These rivers have many tributaries, streams and canals. All of them are used for communication and transportation. The rivers supply us with sufficient water for cultivation of crops and fish for food.
Many important towns are situated on the bank of the rivers and they are known as the river ports. Sometimes, the rivers do some harm to us when they overflow their banks. This is known as flood and flood causes damages to our crops, houses, buildings, roads and public health. However, the gift of the rivers far exceeds the damage caused by flood.
