Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm by the most of the countries in the world including Bangladesh on the second Sunday in May to honor all mothers and express gratitude for the hardships what they bear in bringing up a child. But it has a big history. The earliest history of Mother’s Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. But the roots of Mother’s Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US.

Anna Jarvis is recognized as the Founder of Mother’s Day in US.  And the idea of official celebration of Mother’s day in US was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in 1872. However, people take the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support.  Now, the day has become hugely popular in several countries. Then, there are so many ways of celebrating Mother’s Day. In many countries special prayer services are held in churches in honor of mothers. In Bangladesh, to observe the day, discussion programs are organized by government and non-governmental organizations. Reception programs and cultural programs are organized to mark the day in the capital city. Television channels air special programs and newspapers publish special features and columns to mark the day.

Greeting cards, flowers and gifts featuring mothers are in high demand at the shops and markets. But the most common method of celebrating Mother’s Day is to treat mothers with breakfast in bed. Children allow their mothers to sleep till late in the morning while they along with their father juggle in the kitchen to prepare her favorite breakfast. Most often a Mother’s Day card and a bunch of bouquet accompany the meticulously laid breakfast. Many children prepare a card themselves a day before Mother’s Day. Some also make handmade gifts to show their respect and affection for their mother. Grown up children prefer to buy gifts from the stores ranging from clothes, accessories to jewelry. Cakes, cookies and pies are the favourite dishes prepared on the occasion of Mother’s Day.

Hence, Mother’s Day is the time to honour and cherish the special bond of love that we and our mother share. A mother does so much for her children. It is the perfect occasion to pamper our mom with special gifts and lots of love. And not just our mother, one should also take this opportunity to indulge all women who have loved and cared for us like a mother. This may include our grandmother, mother-in-law, aunts, sisters, colleagues, teachers and the other mother figures in our life. So we should observe Mother’s Day to show honour and great love to our dear mother.
