A dialogue between two friends on dowry system
Jahangir: What's your opinion about dowry?
Shamim : Opinion in what sense?
Jahangir : It's very plain. Whether it is a blessing or curse?
Shamim : Actually, it was a blessing but in our age it has become a curse.
Jahangir : I am not following you.
Shamim : I mean, when it started, its purpose was to help to an extent the newly married couple.
Jahangir : Do you know when this thing started?
Shamim : I am not clear about but this was there in the ear of the Holy Prophet.
Jahangir : Then, it must be a good thing.
Shamim : It must be rather it is .
Jahangir : Then what's wrong with it?
Shamim : The only defect is the way we are following it.
Jahangir : Don't you think things change with the passage of time?
Shamim : Yes, they do but it must be a positive change.
Jahangir : Change is change whether it is positive or negative.
Shamim : You tell me why people say dowry is a curse?
Jahangir : Perhaps because it has lost its very spirit.
Shamim : That's the point.
Jahangir : Most of us say that it is a curse but even then.......
Shamim : That's what the tragedy is.
Jahangir : It means we have double standards.
Shamim : Sure rather triple.
Jahangir : Why do we spend so much money on this?
Shamim : Obviously just to show off.
Jahangir : Isn't it injustice with the poor?
Shamim : It's extreme sort of injustice.
Jahangir : When I get married. I won't ask for it.
Shamim : I too didn't accept dowry.
